Copy-editing and Proofreading are two important stages in the writing and publishing process. Although they may seem similar, there are distinct differences between the two.

What is copy-editing?

Copy-editing involves reviewing a written text for clarity, consistency, and style. A copy-editor may suggest changes to sentence structure, word choice, and tone to improve the flow and readability of the document. They may also check for factual accuracy and ensure that the text conforms to the style guide and any other relevant guidelines.

What is proofreading?

Proofreading, on the other hand, is the final stage of the editing process. It involves checking the text for errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting. A proofreader reads through the document carefully to catch any mistakes that may have been missed during copy-editing.

In summary, copy-editing focuses on improving the quality and readability of the text, while proofreading ensures that the final product is error-free. Both stages are essential to produce a polished and professional document.

Why is it important to proofread your manuscript before publication in self-publishing?

Getting a professional to proofread your manuscript before publishing is incredibly important to ensure that your work is error-free and polished. It helps to catch any spelling or grammatical mistakes, inconsistencies, and other issues that may distract or confuse your readers. By proofreading your manuscript, you can ultimately improve the quality and credibility of your work, which can lead to more positive reviews and increased sales.

Our go-to editor offers mainly two types of editing: copyediting and structural editing. Whether it is your first round or your final round of editing, we have flexible packages to fit your needs.

Plus, if the book is part of a series but not the first book, we offer services to check consistency across the series, such as character backstories, setting details, etc.

What is the difference between copyediting and structural editing?

Copyediting: We correct your spelling, grammar, and punctuation, as well as point out inconsistencies and errors in language use. If you feel your style needs punching up, more intensive line editing is an option.

Structural editing: With this type of editing, also known as substantive or developmental editing, there might be suggestions to improve clarity, structure, or the soundness of your book’s ideas. In other words, structural editing evaluates the overall content of a document to optimize comprehensibility as well as to verify and correct issues with the flow and continuity of the book. Authors can also get help developing their ideas from an early stage.

All editing can be done with track changes on so the author can approve/disapprove any changes or suggestions. Consultation is available before, during, and after the process.

What can an editor do for your work?
The goal of an editor is to ensure that your intent comes across to the reader. Beyond
basic spelling and grammar considerations, the editor will note inconsistencies in style, offer options for where you feel your prose needs work, and point out places where text could be misread.

A polished and error-free book has a better chance of success. Errors and inconsistencies throw readers out of the narrative, taking away from their enjoyment of it. The editor takes the place of your audience, letting you know how they’ll respond, before they even see the book.

When should you work with an editor?
There are options at any time in the process, depending on your needs. Usually, editing takes place after the completion of a full draft of the manuscript and before the design process. Consultation with our experts can help you decide what’s right for you, how to make the most of the process, and even how to minimize costs.
